As director of the Aesculap-Charité Fellowship program in hydrocephalus treatment for neurosurgeons from China and Japan, I am pleased to present this educational opportunity which is funded by an annual grant from Aesculap.
The research fellowship has a clear emphasis on entity, diagnosis, and treatment options of hydrocephalus including and adult and pediatric patients.
Through the participation of my co-faculty member, Ulrich Thomale, participants will be exposed to the expanding repertoire of adult and pediatric hydrocephalus.

Target group
Neurosurgeons from China and Japan, who want to deepen their knowledge and surgical abilities within the range of different hydrocephalus entities and to examine scientific questions regarding Aesculap-Miethke Shunts or their application to hydrocephalus.
Requirements
- Neurosurgeons, in residency or finished resident.
- Good English knowledge (or good German knowledge).
Participants
Two neurosurgeons from China and one neurosurgeon from Japan can participate in the fellowship program every year.

Topics and Application Process
- Neurosurgeons are selected by Charité and Aesculap.
- The emphasis is targeted towards the entity, diagnosis, and treatment options of hydrocephalus including adult and pediatric patients.
- Operative techniques focusing on avoiding complications in shunt surgery and integration of endoscopic advances into the management of hydrocephalus.
- The proximity to the company Miethke in Potsdam offers the opportunity for scientific laboratory work in combination with the fellowship program. In order to gain sustainability, projects might lead in cooperative work for possible publications.
- Participation in a neuroendoscopy course held in Berlin or Tuttlingen offered by Aesculap Academy is optional (depending on course schedule).
- A visit to Aesculap AG in Tuttlingen is planned as well.

November 2013 - January 2014, Zhang Yuanlong, MD, and Li Qingguo, MD, China
Zhang Yuanlong and Li Qingguo are the elected fellows for the Aesculap-Charité Fellowship in the neurosurgical department of the Charité Hospital in Berlin, Germany.
We had been happy to meet both neurosurgeons in November at Aesculap in Tuttlingen. We wish Zhang Yuanlong and Li Qingguo all the best!
July - October 2013, Takaoki Kimura, MD, Japan
Takaoki Kimura is the first Japanese neurosurgeon, who was supported by the Aesculap-Charité Fellowship from July to October.
We are pleased that Takaoki Kimura took the educational oppertunity to join the Charité Hospital, Neurosurgery Department in Berlin, Germany.
We wish Takaoki Kimura all the best for his personal and professional future!
October 2012 - January 2013, Ju Yan, MD, and Wang Donghai, MD, China
Ju Yan and Wang Donghai have been our two fellows in 2012, who have been invited to participate in the Aesculap-Charité Fellowship in Berlin, Germany.
From beginning October till beginning January they got a training in the neurosurgical department of the Charité Hospital in Berlin.
It was a pleasure to meet the fellows Mid of November at Aesculap in Tuttlingen and give them a factory tour through the company.

October 2011 - December 2011, Zhang Hong, MD, China
Zhang Hong was our 2nd Fellow which took the chance to participate in our Aesculap-Charité Fellowship.
During his three months stay in Berlin, Germany, from October till December he have been trained in the neurosurgical department of the Charité Hospital Berlin.
In November we had the chance to welcome Zhang Hong at Aesculap in Tuttlingen personally.
We wish Dr Zhang all the best!
July 2011 - August 2011, Professor Wan Feng, MD, China
We are pleased to name Professor Wan Feng as the first Aesculap-Charité Fellow.
Starting in July he had been trained in the neurosurgical department of the Charité Hospital Berlin.
We didn't want to miss the chance to welcome him at Aesculap in Tuttlingen.
We hope he had a successful stay in Berlin and that he returned to China with many new experiences and ideas.
