About Surgical Site Infections SSI
A surgical site infection (SSI) is an infection that occurs after surgery in the part of the body where the surgery took place. SSI can sometimes be superficial infections involving the skin only. Other SSI are more serious and can involve tissues under the skin, organs, or implanted material.
The World Health Organization WHO stated that SSI threaten the lives of millions of patients each year and contribute to the spread of antibiotic resistance. This is why in 2016 they launched the first global SSI Guideline.
